What is crown reduction?
Crown reduction is a tree surgery technique that involves selectively pruning a tree’s branches to reduce its height or spread while maintaining its overall shape and structure. It’s a way to manage a tree’s size and form without completely removing the tree.
This process is often used to improve the tree’s health, safety, and appearance, and can also be beneficial for the surrounding environment.
British Standards 3998 (2010) states: “The general principle [of Crown Reduction] is that, following reduction, there should still be a strong framework of healthy small-diameter branches and twigs (leaf-bearing structure), capable of producing dense leaf cover during the following growing season.”
